Cohorts are the core of how AI Ready RVA works, and they are the part most communities have not figured out.
A cohort is a group organized around an industry, led by people who work in that industry and use AI tools in their actual jobs. They meet regularly. The conversation stays close to real problems, because the person leading it has the same problems.
Current cohorts include healthcare, K-12 education, human resources, marketing and creative work, money and finance, the nonprofit sector, product, and AI governance, along with cohorts for women in AI and for veterans and first responders. New cohorts launch when enough people in a field ask for one and a practitioner steps up to lead it.
The model matters more than it sounds. A general AI workshop has to serve everyone in the room, which means it serves no one well. A healthcare cohort can talk about clinical documentation, patient communication, and privacy constraints without stopping to explain what a large language model is. That specificity is what makes the time worth spending.
Cohorts are also how the organization scales. Each one is a distribution channel into a sector of the regional economy. When we need to reach HR leaders across Richmond, we do not build a list. The cohort is the list.
Cohort sessions are free for AI Ready RVA members. Non-members can attend individual sessions at a modest cost.
You do not need to be advanced to join. Cohorts include people who have been building with these tools for years and people who opened an AI tool for the first time last month. Both get value, for different reasons.
